What It Gets Right

Death Wish deserves credit for popularizing the high-caffeine coffee category. What It Gets Wrong

Dark roast for high-caffeine coffee is a flavor compromise. Darker roasts emphasize roast character (bitterness, smokiness, ashy notes) at the expense of the origin flavors that make coffee interesting. For a blend that includes Robusta, dark roasting can mask the difference between high-grade and low-grade Robusta — the roast's intensity makes everything taste roughly the same. The result is a coffee that tastes "strong" in the way that dark roasted anything tastes strong: one-dimensional intensity without complexity.

Death Wish is also now a scaled business, contract-roasted, and distributed through major retail channels. The freshness and small-batch quality considerations that matter for high-caffeine coffee are harder to maintain at that scale.
