Why We Named It the Hummingbird — The Story Behind Morning, Bird! Coffee

Every coffee has a story. Mine starts with a confession.

The Problem With "Strong" Coffee

If you've ever bought a bag that promised to "kick you into gear" — and ended up with something that tasted like charcoal dissolved in battery acid — you already know the dirty secret of the high-caffeine aisle: most of it is rough.

Brands chase a big caffeine number by scorching the beans until they're bitter, or dumping in the cheapest Robusta they can find — energy and nothing else. It wakes you up. It's also a cup you'd never actually enjoy.

Why I Put My Name On It

Here's the honest version — #ACB4Life, all cards on the table. I'm not going to invent a story about roasting beans at 4am, because that's not what I do. What I am is picky. For most of my life I couldn't drink coffee at all without burying it in sugar and creamer — almost everything tasted bitter and acrid to me.

So I went hunting for the exception: a high-caffeine coffee good enough that I'd actually want to drink it. I found it — a Robusta-boosted blend, roasted in small batches — and it's now the only coffee I drink. A little honey, a splash of creamer, done. Not bitter. Not acrid. Just genuinely good coffee that also happens to hit like a truck.

That's what Morning, Bird! is: the one high-caffeine blend I'd put my own name on. I picked it, I drink it every morning, and I stand behind every bag that ships.

Why the Hummingbird?

The hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. It beats its wings up to 80 times a second, hovers in place, flies backwards, and burns more energy per gram than almost anything alive. And yet — it's precise. Graceful. Not a sledgehammer.

That's the energy I was after: not brute force, but a serious lift in a cup you actually look forward to.

What's Actually in the Cup

The Hummingbird! Blend is a Robusta-boosted blend — an Arabica breakfast base with Robusta added for the caffeine. Robusta gets a bad reputation, and cheap Robusta earns it. But it also naturally carries about twice the caffeine of Arabica, and that's exactly why it's here: it pushes this blend to roughly 2× the caffeine of a standard cup. I can't hand you a lab report — I haven't had it tested — but I can tell you it does the trick. (Everyone's caffeine tolerance is different, so ease in.)

It's roasted medium-dark, in small batches, several times a week, then shipped fresh — not pulled off a warehouse pallet that's been sitting since spring.

Bold, Not Bitter — That's the Whole Point

That's the bar: bold, but not bitter. A real wake-up without the charcoal aftertaste. Serious caffeine, in something you'd drink even on a morning you didn't strictly need it. If a cup can't clear that bar, it doesn't earn a spot in my mug — or yours.

This Is Just the Beginning

Morning, Bird! started because I was tired of a category that kept choosing caffeine over craft — and tired of brands dressing up a supplier as a fairy tale. I'd rather give you the real thing: a genuinely high-caffeine coffee I actually drink myself, honestly labeled, shipped fresh, none of the cosplay.

The Hummingbird! Blend is the flagship. It's not the finish line. Thanks for being here at the beginning.
