How to Brew the Perfect Cup of High-Caffeine Coffee

High caffeine coffee brews differently than standard coffee — and if you're not dialing in your technique, you're leaving caffeine and flavor on the table. Here's the complete brewing guide for getting the most out of every bag of Hummingbird! Blend.

Step 1 — Start With the Right Grind

Grind size directly affects caffeine extraction. The finer the grind, the more caffeine per cup — but too fine and you get bitter over-extraction. Match your grind to your brew method:

  • Drip machine: Standard Grind — consistent medium grind for balanced extraction
  • Espresso / Moka pot: Espresso Grind — fine grind for maximum pressure extraction
  • French press / Cold brew: Coarse Grind — coarse grind for long steep extraction
  • Any method: Whole Bean — grind fresh immediately before brewing for peak flavor

Step 2 — Water Temperature Matters

Brew between 195°F and 205°F (just off boil). Too cold = under-extraction, weak caffeine. Too hot = bitter over-extraction. This range is the sweet spot for Robusta-blend coffees like the Hummingbird! Blend.

Step 3 — Coffee-to-Water Ratio

  • Standard strength: 1:15 ratio (1g coffee per 15ml water)
  • Strong / high caffeine: 1:12 ratio (1g coffee per 12ml water)
  • Cold brew concentrate: 1:4 ratio, steep 12–24 hours in cold water

Step 4 — Brew Method Caffeine Rankings

Some brew methods extract more caffeine than others:

  • Cold brew concentrate — highest caffeine per ounce
  • Espresso — highest caffeine per ml
  • French press — full immersion = full extraction
  • Drip coffee — consistent, reliable extraction
  • Pour over — clean, precise but slightly lower extraction
